How fractional laser treatment helps
Laser energy is readily absorbed by certain components in the skin, causing a thermal reaction. The powerful laser energy is fractionated, so it contacts the skin in microbeams. This causes significantly less discomfort and tissue trauma than older lasers, and it dramatically reduces healing time.
We use the Palomar Icon 1540nm non-ablative, fractional laser for milder lines, wrinkles and scars, and a CO2 laser for moderate to severe wrinkles, lines and scars. These lasers deliver tiny beams of laser energy to the deeper layers of the skin, targeting sun-damaged cells and scar tissue. Following treatment, the skin goes through a phase of rapid rejuvenation, resulting in a more youthful, glowing complexion. A series of laser sessions are usually required to achieve the best results. Scars tend to become flatter, softer, and more uniformly colored with each treatment.
Frequently Asked Questions
How can I avoid acne scars?
Early treatment and good skin care are essential. Many over-the-counter products are available, but they may be insufficient. If you are not seeing results, particularly if you have cystic acne, it’s time to see your dermatologist. Also, remember to never “pop” pimples by picking or squeezing, as this increases skin trauma and often results in scaring.
How soon will I see results?
Immediately after treatment, some redness and flaking are normal for a day, or two, and for up to a week in some patients. Visible improvement develops gradually over a few weeks, and maximum results are seen around 6 months after treatment.
Will I need more than one treatment?
Although you should see improvement after the first session, several sessions are usually needed to achieve the best results.
Is it painful?
It will feel somewhat like a rubber band snapping against the skin, and is easily tolerated by most patients. We can also apply a topical anesthetic which makes the procedure very tolerable.
Is laser treatment appropriate for dark skin?
Yes, our lasers are safe on darker-skinned patients too. It is important to understand that each patient is unique. We will perform an examination, and review your medical history before recommending the best treatment.
