Excessive sun exposure over many years can also cause a generalized background redness and broken capillaries/spider veins of the face, neck and chest. One of the best treatments for the redness and broken capillaries/spider veins associated with rosacea or sun damage is the photofacial/IPL.
How IPL works
IPL is very similar to laser light, but is typically gentler. It is a broadband light, rather than laser light, and is delivered in short, intense pulses. For treating facial redness, it targets hemoglobin, a component of red blood cells. After treatment, blood vessels and redness fade away.
The safety and efficacy of IPL are highly dependent on the quality of the equipment and, even more importantly, the skill of the provider. At North Sound Dermatology Aesthetics, our offices are equipped with the latest technology, including the advanced Palomar Icon IPL system. We are a national training center for this technology, and our Master Medical Aestheticians train plastic surgeons and dermatologists in its use.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is IPL better than sclerotherapy for facial spider veins?
Yes, IPL is safer than sclerotherapy on the face and produces excellent results, whilst being non-invasive. Since this technology became available, sclerotherapy is rarely used on the face.
Will IPL cure rosacea?
No. Unfortunately, there is no known cure for rosacea. However, IPL will markedly improve rosacea by getting rid of the background redness and red blood vessels associated with rosacea. Typically, patients do not need touch-up treatments for several years after their initial IPL treatment.
Can IPL be used for other red spots and bumps that are not associated with rosacea or sun damage?
Yes. It is an excellent option for treating most red spots and bumps, as well as broken capillaries and spider veins anywhere on the body.
When will I see results?
IPL results are typically immediate, although improvement may take up to a week. We may recommend a series of treatments to achieve optimal improvement.
How long is the recovery period?
There is very little to no downtime associated with IPL. Most patients are able to go right back to work immediately after the treatment. You may experience a mild sunburn-like reaction for a few days.
