Many Americans are on a quest to look and feel younger than ever before, without the cost and down-time associated with plastic surgery procedures. This is why many dermatologists are now offering injectable products to assist patients in reducing the unwanted signs of aging. Botox Cosmetic is an injectable solution that was developed by a dermatologist and ophthalmic surgeon, and relaxes the muscles of facial expression, thereby smoothing away the overlying lines and wrinkles. Botox can improve the appearance of crow’s feet, frown and forehead lines, as well as reverse downturned corners of the mouth.
The results will typically last 3-4 months, and may extend even longer, the more treatments you have.
Botox is often combined with dermal fillers, like Juvederm, Belotero and Radiesse, to provide what is now called a “liquid facelift”, rather than having to undergo facelift surgery which is associated with significant down-time.
Unlike many spas and medi-spas, all Botox injections at North Sound Dermatology Aesthetics are performed by a Board-Certified Dermatologist, Board-Certified Dermatology ARNP or Board-Certified Dermatology PA, all of whom have extensive training and experience in the procedure and attend yearly national and international conferences to remain at the forefront of Botox advances.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is Botox?
Wrinkles and lines on the face are caused by the repeated muscular contractions involved in frowning, squinting, smiling and other types of facial expression. Botox Cosmetic is an agent that relaxes these muscles, thereby smoothing out the overlying lines and wrinkles.
What is the difference between Botox and other brands like Dysport and Xeomin?
Botox, Dysport and Xeomin are all commercial formulations that are produced by different companies and all are approved by the FDA for moderate-to-severe frown lines. Each product is slightly different as far as the chemical make-up and packaging, but all three have the same active ingredient.
How long does it last?
The effects of Botox usually last three to four months. After several treatments, the effects of Botox Cosmetic may begin to last longer.
When will I see results from a Botox treatment?
Within days, you may see a marked improvement in the injected areas. Lines continue to improve for up to 30 days, and results can last for up to 4 months.
Where can Botox be used?
Botox can be used for frown lines, the upper forehead, around the eyes for crow’s feet and for manipulating the shape and height of the brow and corners of the mouth.
How long will the treatment take?
After an initial consultation with the dermatologist, the treatment itself will only take about 5 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas to be treated. We can give you a topical numbing cream to reduce any discomfort associated with the injections, which needs to be applied 30 minutes prior to your appointment.
Does it hurt?
Discomfort is usually minimal and brief. We use the smallest needles available for the injections. Prior to injecting, the provider may choose to numb the area with a cold pack, ice or a topical numbing cream.
What are possible side-effects?
Possible side-effects are usually mild. These may include some redness, tenderness and bruising in the areas treated. Make-up can be used to cover any temporary discoloration. A droopy eyelid may also occur, but is very rare and can be resolved using a special eye drop.
What is the recovery time after treatment?
The treatment requires no downtime. Most people can return to their normal daily routines right away. We recommend that you do not schedule a Botox appointment within 2 weeks of any special events such as weddings, vacations or photography.
Is there anything I should avoid?
For 14 days prior to your appointment, we recommend that you do not use any blood-thinning medications, including aspirin and anti-inflammatory medications like ibuprofen and naproxen. This will help reduce your chances of bruising after treatment. Please do NOT stop any blood-thinning medications that have been prescribed to you by a doctor.
For the 1st 24 hours after treatment, you should avoid strenuous exercise, the consumption of alcoholic beverages, the use of blood-thinning medications (unless recommended by your doctor), manipulating or sleeping on the treated area, and you should also avoid extended exposure to the sun, heat or freezing temperatures.
